CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE (COPD)
What is COPD? COPD is a term now used to describe Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema. It causes progressive narrowing of the airways making it difficult to get air in and out of the lungs efficiently. COPD also causes progressive destruction to areas of the lungs, which are responsible for moving oxygen from the air into the blood stream and taking the waste gas back from the blood stream so it can be breathed out.
COPD is generally a direct result of smoking. However other factors such as dust and fume exposure may occasionally add to the effects of smoking, but on there own are rarely the only reason for COPD development. The exception to this is a rare inherited problem and there is usually a very strong family history. COPD cannot be cured, but modern treatment is able to improve symptoms and keep you active and help prevent bad attacks.
If COPD is suspected, the GP/Nurse can refer you to the COPD clinic for assessment.
