HYPERTENSION
What is Hypertension? Hypertension (persistent raised blood pressure) is a risk factor for stroke and heart attack.
In order to identify hypertension, patients will have their blood pressure measured every five years or more frequently if indicated.
Hypertension is identified when the blood pressure is persistently raised over 140/90 on three separate occasions. Patients will then be asked to make a 30 minute appointment with the practice nurse for:
- Relevant blood tests (including cholesterol)
- Urinalysis
- Electrocardiograph (ECG)
- Lifestyle advice
Following this consultation an appointment with the GP is needed to establish cardiovascular risk and the need for drug therapy.
Occasionally specialist investigation of patients with signs or symptoms suggesting an underlying cause of hypertension may be necessary.
Once well controlled an annual review of care needs to be arranged with the practice nurse to monitor
- Blood pressure
- Lifestyle symptoms
- Medication
Plus a six monthly Blood Pressure check with the Health Care Assistant.
Clinics for Hypertension checks are held at both Arbroath House and William Brown Centre.
